Why We Love Crafts for Kids:
Art develops creative thinking, provides means of communication and self expression, increases self understanding, strengthens self concepts and confidence, serves as an emotional release, provides decision-making opportunities, develops appreciation for the individuality of others, aids physical coordination, develops work habits and a sense of responsibility, heightens aesthetic awareness and sensitivity, and generates joy!

For Children with Special Needs:
Assist your child as much as needed - but allow it to be his project.  Art projects are great for fine motor exercise, and using creativity.

If your child has a limited attention span, have all supplies ready before having him begin the project.

Let your child decide if his rainbow is going to be ROYGBIV or just pretty colors in a row. Have him sort the pom poms by color to prepare for this project!
Sensory Fun! If your child enjoys playing with pom poms, put a bunch of them in a deep bowl or small box. Add a few cups, a large spoon or sand shovel and anything else you can think of that will encourage holding, pouring and playing with them. We added plastic eggs to a container with pom poms and cotton balls and my kids pretended they were baby chicks! Today they pretended they were dinosaur eggs!

For Older Children: An older child can further enjoy this project by writing the word RAINBOW at the top of the paper :)

A BOOK with an important lesson that complements this craft project is "The Rainbow Fish" By Marcus Pfister. Although the rainbow fish is the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean, he is not happy. His beauty is so important to him but he must decide if it's more important than  having friends. A very good lesson about what really makes us happy in life :) Beautiful illustrations and textured pages will please any preschooler!
