KIDS CRAFTS PROJECT #40: Springtime Glitter (snow) Globe
Preschool Crafts for all abilities!
For Ages 5 Years and Up
☼ A great way to bring some Spring inside! ☼
Supplies Needed:
- Clean Glass Jar with Twist On Lid (don't use a mason jar - trust me!)
- Water
- Glitter
- 1 Waterproof Plastic Toy Animal that Fits in the Jar
- A few small plastic butterflies, frogs, flowers (anything Spring)
- Aquarium/Silicone Sealant (this is a MUST!)
- Newspaper To Keep The Work Area Clean (the glitter tend to get away!)
Time Needed:
- 5 Minutes to Prep Lid, Read Aquarium Sealant Instructions & Glue Animal into Jar Lid
- From 4 - 24 Hours Drying Time (depends on aquarium sealant used)
- 10 Minutes to Create Rest of Glitter Globe
- From 4 - 24 Hours Drying Time (depends on aquarium sealant used)
- Put the lid on the jar. Yes, do this FIRST! Why? I used a glass jar that had embossed writing on it. When we were all finished and put the lid on our project, we discovered that the animal was in the exact WRONG position! His cute little face is smack up against the writing!
- Once the lid is closed completely use a marker to put a dot on the part of the lid that is where you want the front of your project to be.
HINT: No writing, etching, designs there. - ADULT: Open the jar and use aquarium sealant to glue the toy animal to the inside of the lid FACING your dot. We also glued a butterfly to our animal. Now you are sure that when you seal the jar, the animal will be in a good viewing position :)
HINT: Aquarium sealant can have a strong odor. Use it in a well ventilated area. Read all instructions on the label.
Don't use a mason jar like we did. You live you learn! - Let this dry completely according to directions. It may be up to 24 hours.
- Continue project once the sealant is dry and can be submerged in water.
- Add about 1/2 tsp of pale pink and 1/2 tsp purple glitter to the water in the jar.
HINT: We added the glitter after we added the water which caused it to stick to the animal when we put the lid on. You might try adding the glitter first, but I'm not sure how much it will help. Once you shake the globe a few times it resolves itself.
- Add your other tiny butterflies, flowers etc to the jar.

Our tiny flowers.
My advice is to try adding the glitter before the water. - Fill the Jar with water, leaving about a 1/4 inch space from the fill line.
HINT: You have to take into account that the animal on the lid will displace the water a little. You don't want it to overflow once you are connecting the lid with the jar. We didn't add enough water. You want enough air in there to be able to produce the "snow" effect but not so much that you have a large gap when it's turned upside down. - TEST! Screw the lid on and see if the water level is good and if you have enough glitter. A little goes a long way. If you have too much use a spoon to scoop some out.
- ADULT: No use aquarium sealant along the part of the jar (threads?) where the lid attaches. HINT: Aquarium sealant can have a strong odor. Use it in a well ventilated area. Read all instructions on the label.
- Screw the lid onto the jar. Your animal should be facing the right way :)
- Store UPSIDE DOWN (animal hanging upside down) for 24 hours, or however long your aquarium sealant says to wait before submerging in water.
- Turn right side up!

Glitter is falling in this photo!

Why We Love Crafts for Kids:
Art develops creative thinking, provides means of communication and self expression, increases self understanding, strengthens self concepts and confidence, serves as an emotional release, provides decision-making opportunities, develops appreciation for the individuality of others, aids physical coordination, develops work habits and a sense of responsibility, heightens aesthetic awareness and sensitivity, and generates joy!
For Children with Special Needs:
Assist your child as much as needed - but allow it to be his project. Art projects are great for fine motor exercise and using creativity.
If you child has a limited attention span, have all supplies ready before having him begin the project. In this particular project you will want to glue the animal to the jar lid the day before involving your child.
This opportunity for hands-on learning with no wrong choices is ideal to foster self esteem as well. Let him choose what colors of glitter to use, which + how many plastic butterflies etc.
A fun BOOK to read in conjunction with this craft is "When Will it Be Spring?" by Catherine Walters. He's so excited about Spring coming that he just can't sleep! After falsely thinking Spring has come a few times, Spring finally does arrive for this anxious little bear cub and his Mother.
SING This Active Spring Song!First I was a raindrop, falling, falling.
(wiggling fingers singing softly)
First I was a raindrop, drop, drop, drop.
(using pointer fingers to "drop drop drop")
Next I was a puddle, puddle, puddle.
(palms flat to ground in circular motion for puddles)
Next I was a puddle with my friends.
Then there came some children, children, children.
(marching)
Then there came some children, SPLASH! SPLASH! SPLASH!
(LOUD "SPLASH SPLASH SPLASH + imitate splashing with the feet)
