Melissa & Doug Personalized Door Hanger Craft Kits: Project #35 of 300 Crafts for Kids in 2011

KIDS CRAFTS PROJECT #35: Melissa & Doug Personalized Door Hanger Craft Kits (2 Sided!)
Ideal for Children with uncommon names!

Supplies Needed:
Time Needed:  15-30 Minutes

PROLOGUE:
I was very surprised at how proud my children were and still are of this project! They are just thrilled with it and love that it hangs on the door to their room. Practically every day they make a comment about their door hanger! Sometimes they give them to each other as gifts and put them on the wrong room for the day LOL! Another thing I didn't know (and I'm ashamed because we've been selling these for years!) is that they're double sided and you can decorate BOTH sides! $3.99 each (MSRP $4.99) at GummyLump.com.

This craft is also great to do if you're having trouble keeping your child sleeping in his own room at night!
    What To Do:
    1. Adult: Open Package.
Decorate Your Own Door Hanger Kit contains 1 Double Sided Door Hanger (wooden), 1 Glue Tube, 1 Purple Glitter Glue Tube, 12 Gems, Alphabet Stickers

    2. Start by peeling off the alphabet stickers and put your child's name on the door hanger. Let them choose where their name will go :)
NOTE: We did not do it this way, but it would have been a good idea!
Several of each letter are provided.

    3. Put the stickers (boy version) or gems (girl version) onto the door hanger. Some belong on the handle, but there are enough to spread around!

For Children with Special Needs: Art projects are great for fine motor exercise, and using creativity.

The star stickers are especially small so an adult may have to remove them from the backing. Even 4 year olds may not have the dexterity to handle them. Assist your child as much as needed - but allow it to be his project.

If you child has a limited attention span, have the package already opened before having him begin the project.

This opportunity for hands-on learning with no wrong choices is ideal to foster self esteem as well. Let him choose where to put his name, where to put the stickers, and where to apply the glitter glue.
This creation is made for display right on his door knob! This will remind him of the beautiful creation he made and of how capable he is.
For Older Children: An older child can further enjoy this project by writing his name in stickers on his own!

    Associated Educational Activities:
A great book to read with this craft is "Kiss Good Night" by Amy Hest, with illustrations by Anita Jeram. This story is wonderful for keeping bedtime light! I think any mother can relate the the child who needs just a little more time or just one more thing before going to bed :)
